Warts and Verrucas

What are they? There are various types of warts including plane, common, filiform and verrucas. These types of warts can develop individually or in clusters and are highly contagious.

Why do they occur? Warts are caused by certain strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV). The virus is present in the skin cells of a wart. HPV is a family of viruses that affects the skin and moist membranes (mucosa) of the body. There are more than 100 different strains of HPV. Different strains are responsible for different types of warts.

What else can I try to prevent my warts reoccurring? There is some evidence that low dose Zinc supplements can assist in the clearance and prevention of warts.

What to expect with Cryotherapy? Nitrous Oxide is extremely cold. When sprayed on your skin, the top layer rapidly freezes. When you leave, the freezing site will probably sting and itch as it thaws. Expect the site to look worse over the next few days before it gets better. Swelling and/or blistering often develop within a couple of hour of treatment. 2-3 days after treatment a scab will probably form which will then take 7-10 days to fall off, leaving a pink smooth area.
